The 7th Volunteer Bn The Royal Scots(The Royal Regiment) Cap & collar badges
A superb, extremely rare set of Cap and Collar badges to the 7th VB The Royal Scots(The Royal Regiment) known as "Leith's Own" due to the area in which they were based and recruited from.
The Battalion suffered a most horrendous loss of life on the way out to Gallipoli
Having been on Coastal Defence duties they were in high spirits on the 22nd May 1915 as they embarked at Larbert, with a steamer waiting at Liverpool to take them on to Gallipoli.
Near to Gretna, the train ran into the empty carriages of a local train with dreadful consequences 214 soldiers being killed or burned to death. The 64 survivors did carry on to Liverpool later but their shock was so profound that they were returned home.
B&C companies did eventually go out to Gallipoli with the 4th Battalion.
The distress apart I have never previously come across such an exceptional set of badges.
